Auroville: Meditation Inside the Matrimandir

 Auroville: Meditation Inside the Matrimandir

I am sitting in unison around the silver orb with 25 strangers in complete silence…meditating, reflecting, sharing my spirituality. Not a word uttered in 20 minutes.

At the centre of Auroville lies the Matrimandir, a 10-storey high massive golden dome which serves as the city centre focal point both physically and spiritually. I just couldn’t help but stop outside of the security perimeter and stare in awe while sun rays glittered off the hundreds of gold plated circular panels, wondering “What could possibly be inside”? Unfortunately, most day-trip visitors to Auroville will never know, the dome having average wait times of a week to enter. I was lucky enough to secure a spot on the last day of my stay (through planning and a little begging), and the visit that followed was well worth the process.

Arrival to the Matrimandir for Meditation

We arrived in the early morning to the Matrimandir as a group of 25 visitors – the daunting golden dome towering above us – facing an upward stone stairway with an awning of a large stone triangle carving embedded within a circular stone. We enter the cool, dimly lit entrance barefoot and in silence. We are then motioned to be seated, put on clean white socks, and follow a large upwards spiral staircase, giving way to the massive beautiful spherical open structure having dimly colored red, orange, and white lighting peppered with candlelight. It made me think of a backdrop to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Matrimandir

Celebrating Auroville’s birthday, with a 5am holy bonfire outside the Matrimandir.

In single file, we ascended to the roof structure – again, in pure silence – and enter a dark quiet circular room supported by massive circular pillars. In the centre is a silver orb placed on a golden stand emitting a white light beaming into a small hole in the ceiling. My initial reaction was being trapped in a spaceship…a spaceship that was about to take off to colonize another planet. But I also instantly developed a huge, calming, genuine smile on my face as I enter this setting. I just can’t help it. I am sitting in unison around the silver orb with 25 strangers in complete silence…meditating, reflecting, sharing my spirituality. Not a word uttered in 20 minutes. Our mutual energy flowing into the orb, which then channels our spirits into the sky. No speeches. No chants. No propaganda. Just meditation in unison.

An epic experience

The Matrimandir experience is a very practical way to demonstrate how we are all “One”. One Mind. One Spirit. In my 15 years of extensive travel, this will no doubt retain a permanent place among the most interesting, beautiful, and tasteful of experiences.

Matrimandir

Some art I snapped while at the art installation outside the Matrimandir. Pretty dope.
